French Figure of George Washington

Status: Sold

General Description: A Heroic Patinated Bronzed Cast Metal Figure of George Washington, inscribed "Wasingthon" [sic], French, for the American Market, Mid-19th century.

Details: The pose and style relate closely to figures of Washington as Commander-in-Chief of the Revolutionary Army on French clocks made by Dubuc and others for the American Market in the first quarter of the 19th century. In this version, Washington holds a document in his right hand which probably represents the Declaration of Independence. The image is based closely on John Trumbull's 1780 portrait of Washington popularized through engravings for the next two decades. The misspelling of the name is a charming malapropism in character for the French. Height: 29 inches.
