Gerry" and dated "1840" lower right. Details: A charming and extremely fine early American landscape evocative of New England country life in the early nineteenth century. The dome of the Massachusetts Statehouse on Beacon Hill is visible in the left background, indicating that the view is located in a small town or suburban area within sight of Boston. Samuel Lancaster Gerry, a native Bostonian, returned home in 1840, the year the painting is dated, after three years of traveling and studying in Europe. He became the leader of the "White Mountain School" of painters and is a well-known American artist. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Boston Athenaeum, as well as the Pennsylvania Academy, National Academy, and American Art-Union. His professional career was spent chiefly in or near Boston.
