Details: Nearly identical to a pair at Winterthur, Plate 466 in Charles H. Montgomery's American Furniture, The Federal Period, 1788-1825, 1966. For another nearly identical example, see Plate XV in "Design Sources for Windsor Furniture, Part II: The Early Nineteenth Century, " by Nancy Goyne Evans in The Magazine Antiques, May 1988, p. 1141. All are faux grained rosewood and gilt and polychrome-decorated, with distinctive large anthemion-form splats.
