General Description: Attributed to Lam Qua (Active 1820-1850), A Rare China Trade Portrait of A Western Hong Merchant or Sea Captain, circa 1840.

Details: with A View of the Approach to Canton Harbor and the Nine Stage Pagoda at Whampoa Anchorage in Left Background, oil on canvas, in magnificent original carved and gilded Chinese Frame, retaining original gilding, Canton, China, circa 1840. The attribution is based on style, subject matter and detail. Especially relevant is the style of facial painting, the background landscape to the left, including the Nine Stage Pagoda on the hill and the size, which is the same as his standard porrtaits. Height: 18 inches; Width: 16-3/8 inches.
