Philadelphia Orator's Table

Status: Sold

General Description: A Fine and Rare Classical Marble Top Carved and Reeded Bowfront Mahogany Server or Hall Table, Philadelphia, Circa 1825-1830.

Details: The open anthemion-carved brackets under the front and sides of the apron and the boldly reeded legs, point to Philadelphia origin. According to traditions of the New Jersey family in which this table descended, it was used at the Philadelphia Athenaeum, founded in 1814, as an "orator's table ", i.e., the speaker stood behind it with his papers in front of him. The anthemion brackets closely resemble similar elements on recamiers and "Grecian" couches by the famous French emigré cabinetmaker Anthony G. Quervelle. Elegant bow front apron veneered in plum pudding mahogany and boldly reeded legs terminating in matching reeded elongated melon feet. Later marble top. Dimensions (with marble top): Width: 42-3/8 inches; depth: 28-1/4 inches; height: 32-1/4 inches .
