The Pirate by F. Liffers (1841)Status: For Sale General Description: Liffers, F. The Pirate (1841). Oil on canvas, signed lower left corner "F. Liffers. 1841." This well-executed portrait of an old pirate sitting atop a chestful of booty and holding an old musket exhibits many characteristics of the romantic style Details: The style of this European (probably Dutch) painting, as well as the artist's unccanny ability to capture the rosy glow of the sky at the moment of sunset, bathes the entire canvas in a lovely warm light, beautifully related to the pirate's blue coat and red sash and the bolt of red cloth in the treasure chest. Liffers' style and palette are reminiscent of the work of contemporary American artists such as George Caleb Bingham and William Sidney Mount, who were strongly influenced by the Dusseldorf School. The conception is altogether picturesque and appealing.
