General Description: A Fine and Rare Federal Carved and Inlaid Mahogany Shield or Vase Form Dressing Glass, on Boldly Shaped “Horse “, Satin or Boxwood line inlay, Original Glass, Tulip Poplar Backboard, and Lion Mask Brass Pulls, Probably Philadelphia, circa 1785.

Details: This Dressing Glass is similar to but more sophisticated in form than one illustrated in Hornor's Blue Book of Philadelphia Furniture. Cf. also Montgomery, American Furniture: The Federal Period, Plate 249, pp. 284-285 for another similar but less desirable example. The secondary wood places it south of New England and the design probably north of Baltimore. Dimensions: H: 24 inches (top to bottom); 21 inches (mirror frame); W: 19 ½ inches; D: 10 inches.
