General Description: An Exceptional and Extremely Rare Pair of Patinated and Gilt Bronze and Crystal Figural Argand Lamps, probably by Thomas Messenger & Sons, Birmingham, England, labeled "J. & I. Cox, New York", circa 1830-1840. Cut and frosted shades. Electrified.

Details: Original cut crystal prism rings, supported by Classical caryatid figures resting on leafage-decorated stepped plinths, of identical form to a double argand lamp in "Classical America," at the Newark Museum in 1963, Figure 198 in the exhibit catalog,1963. Fonts decorated with Classical masks connected with swags. Sold by New York City retailers. J. & I. (James and John) Cox,5 Maiden Lane. Height [to finials on fonts]: 22-3/4 inches. .
