General Description: A Magnificent and Grand Eagle-decorated Giltwood Convex Looking Glass, with candle arms, made and labeled by Thomas Fentham, London, circa 1802.

Details: Original gilding, mirror plate, and labeled backboard. Reeded black liner surrounding original convex mirror plate, surrounded by gilt carved wooden frame with applied gilt spherules, topped by a foliate pediment with applied spherules, supporting an ebonized spread-winged eagle holding a chain and two balls in its beak. Original backboard retains maker's label of "THOMAS FENTHAM/ NO. 136, STRAND/NEAR SOMERSET HOUSE,/Manufacturer of Looking-Glasses/Concave and Convex Mirrors/AND ALL SORTS OF/PICTURE AND GLASS FRAMES,/***GLASS FOR EXPORTATION" . Fentham was at this address beginning in 1802, cf Schiffer's The Mirror Book, p. 215, referencing Colonial Williamsburg, for an identically worded label.
